Grants to LGBTQIA Individuals

We help emergent leaders through scholarships & education

Applications Open:
March 1, 2021

As the upper Midwest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex regional community foundation, PFund Foundation recognizes that dedicated, connected and supported generations of LGBTQIA leaders are central to the resilience and health of our communities. Our grant recipients embody courage, resilience and commitment to catalyzing and building communities where LGBTQIA people are celebrated and live free from discrimination, violence, invisibility and isolation.

We award scholarships to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and allied individuals for their commitment to leadership within their communities. Individual grants support bold leaders pursuing academic programs (2- and 4-year institutions, universities and colleges) and leadership development opportunities (certifications, credentials, leadership programs, training, etc.).

Our scholarships are limited to applicants who:

  • Live in and/or attend a program/institution in our region
    • Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
  • Are a part of the LGBTQIA community
  • Enrolled in an academic program or institution in the fall and/or spring of 2021/2022
  • 17 or older after June 1, 2021

We have a single application for all of our scholarships. PFund Foundation’s individual scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

We require for you to fill out the online application form via Submittable. You will need two letters of recommendation from people who know you and can tell us about your commitment to leadership in LGBTQIA communities. References can include mentors, community members, school counselors or academic advisors.

Submittable will ask that you create an online profile that allows you to save and edit your application. You will also use this profile to check if you have been awarded a scholarship, and ask questions of PFund’s staff.

Although many of our scholarships are limited to 2- and 4-year universities and academic institutions, we also grant a few leadership awards to people invested in the LGBTQIA community seeking to develop their leadership skills, maintain their work as a community activist or organizer, or need financial assistance to attend conferences and workshops that will enhance their skills.

All post-secondary institutions qualify including traditional four-year colleges and universities, technical and trade schools, and certificate programs.
We support people across the age spectrum, 17 years of age and older. If you are 17, we do require parental consent for confidentiality and press release.

PFund Foundation uses a community-driven review process to identify and recognize leaders. The committee is made up of LGBTQA and allied volunteers who diligently review applications, select finalist and recommend awards to the Board of Directors for approval. Once the Board approves the recommendations, we will notify all applicants via email and mail.

Scholarship Application Opens – March 1, 2021

Scholarship Application Closes – June 1, 2021 (before Midnight)

Scholarship Announced – August 2021

Scholarship Fund dispersed – September 2021

You will need two letters of recommendation for your PFund Foundation Scholarship Application. Be sure to connect with your recommenders to ask them to provide you a letter in advance.

The application form will ask you to provide the email address of the recommenders.

PFund Foundation recognizes that not all LGBTQIA people feel safe coming out to teachers, professors or other professional figures in their lives. Therefore, the only requirement we have on who may write a letter of recommendation for you is that they not be a member of your family of origin (or legal guardian).

Recommendation letters must be submitted online by June 1, 2021. It is your responsibility to ensure that the letters arrive by the deadline.
