Founded in 1994, the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project is Wisconsin’s largest digital archive dedicated to preserving and sharing LGBTQ historical media. Entirely volunteer-run and community-driven, it honors the legacy of Louis Stimac, a pioneering historian who taught Wisconsin’s first gay history course. The Project documents decades of activism through oral histories, photographs, letters, and more, including its groundbreaking work on the 1961 Black Nite Uprising. It offers free educational resources, tours, and presentations to ensure accessibility and visibility, especially for marginalized groups. Through outreach, exhibits, podcasts, and advocacy, the Project combats censorship and historical erasure, empowering future generations by safeguarding Wisconsin’s rich LGBTQ heritage.
