St. Cloud Pride was started in 2010 to raise awareness regarding issues of heterosexism, homophobia and transphobia within the Central Minnesota community. The first annual St. Cloud Pride celebration was attended by an estimated 1,700 people and has grown to over 8,000 attendees in recent years. Our major focus is to provide education, resources and event opportunities to the LGBTQ+ community throughout the year. Members of St. Cloud Pride range from all aspects of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Ally spectrum, and share the goal of making sure everyone takes pride in themselves. Since 2009, leadership has moved from a founding/startup era into a transitional period for leadership and organizational capacity, followed by a rebirth and rebuilding the board and core activities (2017–2021 puppy parade, park clean-ups, scholarship), and a renewed phase of stable leadership and expanding offerings (2022–present incl. safe space trainings, partnering with area pride boards, binder program, medical provider training funding, youth queerconnects) While still well known for “Pride Week,” in the past five years, St. Cloud Pride developed year-round connection events called QueerConnects (adults, intergenerational, and youth), which are vital to evolving beyond the flagship weeklong celebration each September. The organization operates an in-demand chest binder program and formed partnerships with organizations such as QueerSpace Collective to serve youth, supports regional Pride organizations, incorporating access through interpreters and accessibility advocates. In 2023–2024, St. Cloud Pride participated in a collaborative effort to join a Queer Community Center in downtown St. Cloud as a pilot in year-round space. Although the center was short-lived for external and financial reasons, the experience contributed to ongoing learning about community needs, capacity, and sustainable approaches. Now in its 17th year, St. Cloud Pride is undergoing a strategic planning process to imagine its next evolutions in response to current joys and challenges in the region.
