The Red River Rainbow Seniors was established on April 17, 2017, to provide advocacy, education, support and fun for the 50+ LGBTQ Community in the Red River Valley. In May 2017, Larry Peterson presented a proposal to undertake an oral history project that would record and preserve life histories of LGBTQ+ elders and their allies in our region. The RRRS Oral History Committee was formed, and the first interview was conducted in November 2017. Over the past nine years, dedicated volunteer interviewers have collected close to 250 life histories of those who live or have lived in North Dakota, Northwestern Minnesota and the bordering regions. Each interview is transcribed following the Minnesota Historical Society guidelines. Audio files, transcripts and other donated materials (photographs, important documents, etc.) are deposited at the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Archives as a part of the permanent collection: “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains.” With permission of the narrators, these materials are made available through the online platform Digital Horizons. In 2021, we conducted a second oral history project to document the tenth anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Minnesota in partnership with the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC). This collection is available as part of the “Breaking Barriers” at NDSU Archives as well as at the Clay County Archives. The “Breaking Barriers” collection has been utilized for public education programs: our “Breaking Barriers: Three Journeys” presentation, the Prairie Public Radio Podcast “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ+ Stories from the Northern Plains,” and the exhibit “At Last: Tenth Anniversary of Marriage Equality in Minnesota” at the HCSCC. We are also aware of several published authors and pastors who have utilized the collection as a part of their work.
