Since 1997, EyesOpenIowa (EOI) has led the promotion of comprehensive sex education for Iowa’s teens, with a focus on young women, youth of color, LGBTQ+ youth, and young people living in the state’s rural areas. EOI helps Iowa’s schools and community-based organizations to implement evidence-based, inclusive sex ed programs. EOI’s leadership and outcomes have earned recognition from state government and national funders. For 12 years, EOI oversaw Iowa’s Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention program, helping to reduce the state’s teen birth rate by 39%. EOI is also a site for the national Working to Institutionalize Sex Education program, improving sex ed in 170 school districts, reaching 200,000 young people annually. This includes the 7-9% of Iowa’s youth who identify as LGBTQ+, many of whom rely on comprehensive sex education for information about their identity and sexual and reproductive health. In 2023, EOI launched both its SHARE program and its Youth Advisory Council to provide even more tailored sexual health programming to LGBTQ+ youth in Iowa.
