Through all of Family Tree Clinic’s programs, we reach over 20,000 people per year. Please note the numbers served above only represent patients in our clinic where we have accurate demographic data. In our Health Education and Engagement programming we track the number of people served and can estimate general demographics through county and school district data, but don’t have a reliable way to report the number of people served in the specific communities asked for above. Established in 1971, Family Tree Clinic (Family Tree) provides essential sexual and reproductive health care and education to LGBTQ, BIPOC, young, and low-income communities disproportionately affected by health inequities. Our mission is to cultivate a healthy community through comprehensive sexual health care and education, with a vision to eliminate health disparities through innovative, personalized sexual health care and education for diverse needs. Family Tree’s values are rooted in a commitment to furthering social and reproductive justice while centering anti-oppression and racial justice. Founded by student activists to provide low-cost reproductive care, Family Tree has a long history of centering marginalized communities and addressing health inequities through community-led solutions. For example, in 2009, we launched a patient-driven LGBTQ Health Access Initiative to address significant sexual health disparities in the local LGBTQ community. This effort transformed our clinic’s culture, and by 2024, LGBTQ patients made up 78% of those we serve – up from just 9% in 2009. Following this initiative, in 2015 we partnered with trans community members and trans-led organizations to co-create a gender-affirming hormone care program rooted in informed consent. Informed consent means we trust patients to make their own choices about their care after getting the information they need. For gender-affirming hormone care, this means patients don’t need a letter from a therapist to start treatment – reducing barriers to care. While now widely used as the standard of care, Family Tree’s informed consent model was the first in the Twin Cities. Since then, the program has grown by over 1,000%, and continues to expand every year and be a leading example of patient-centered, affirming care.
