In 1987, in response to the AIDS crisis locally, a Benedictine monk opened the first community care home in Minnesota that took in gay men who were dying of AIDS and had nowhere else to go. Through the 1990s, five additional care homes opened in Minneapolis and St. Paul, run largely with volunteer support from faith communities. These eventually merged to become Clare Housing. Due to improvements in anti-retroviral medications a new need emerged in 1996; the need for affordable, permanent housing with on-site services delivered with respect. In 2005, Clare Housing opened its first apartment building with 24/7 on-site services for extremely low-income people living with HIV. Today we have four of these apartment buildings. In 2008, we added a scattered site housing program to serve people with children and/or large families. We also operate several smaller housing programs to meet the emerging needs of people living with HIV who are also experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Clare Housing is the largest provider of supportive housing for people living with HIV in Minnesota.
