In 1971, a group of passionate parents founded the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) to seek greater understanding and better school support for their children affected by autism. More than 50 years later, AuSM serves all ages and continues its mission to create connections, empowering everyone in the autism community with the resources needed to live fully. AuSM seeks to enhance the lives of all who are a part of the Minnesota autism community, with a fundamental commitment to advocacy, education, support, collaboration, and community building. While AuSM is best known for providing information, resources, education, advocacy, counseling services, sensory-friendly events, and accessible summer camps for autistic youth and adults, AuSM has provided free support groups for autistic adults who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community for many years. Support groups meet online via Zoom to support attendance from rural participants. AuSM provides a sensory-friendly space at Twin Cities Pride each year and seeks to expand this service to Pride events in Greater Minnesota. AuSM also provides scholarships and discounts for LGBTQ+ participants in all programs and services. Gender-affirming care is a central pillar of the neurodiversity-affirming care provided by AuSM counseling and therapy services.
