Trans Northland

Our organization’s roots extend back to 1995 with the region’s earliest transgender support network, but our formal history began in 2012 with the founding of the Lake Superior Transgender Group. Founded by Nathalie Crowley, Shelby-Lyn James, and others, this group established the first regular, monthly peer support groups for the Twin Ports community and helped facilitate a partner group for friends and families. In the spring of 2015, we evolved into Trans Plus, securing a physical meeting space in the Building For Women in downtown Duluth and expanding our programming to bi-monthly support groups. In late 2021, responding to community feedback to be more inclusive of non-binary and Two Spirit identities, we rebranded. We officially launched as Trans Northland in June 2022 and achieved 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2023.
