Chippewa Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center was incorporated in approximately 2001. Not all is known about the circumstances or the exact history of the organization, but it has served the Chippewa Valley on a continuing basis since that time. Over its lifetime, the Center’s work has been carried out by volunteers motivated by the need to create more affirming spaces in the community, celebrate queer joy openly, and provide opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect. Because it has had a history of strong support from passionate community members, the Center has been able to accomplish many milestones in its work. In recent years it has kickstarted the Chippewa Valley’s Pride in the Park celebration, stepped up to provide a consistent home for youth serving community events, developed resources to serve the needs of the community, provided a home to grassroots efforts serving queer and trans community members, and secured a consistent brick-and-mortar location to both house its work and serve as a queer affirming third space. These accomplishments have not come without challenges. Turnover in leadership, loss of institutional knowledge, and limitations in capacity have all played a role in the history of the Center. Each of these hardships has provided challenges to work through, but have also led to growth and improvement within the organization. Before finding its current home, the Center had inconsistent housing and had needed to relocate multiple times; its most recent move taking place in 2020 shortly before the COVID-19 epidemic. Three years later, most of its longest-serving board members stepped back from leadership, and this left a significant gap in institutional knowledge. Newer members stepped up and have worked to develop new best practices and create more sustainability in the organization. This change also took place during a time when the organization was working to develop a full time employee role. Starting in 2023, maintaining this employee position has been essential to maintaining consistency in the Center’s programming and operations, and in setting its intentions for future work.
