GSAFE has roots going back to 1991, when we were two all-volunteer grassroots organizations functioning out of members’ homes: Gays and Lesbians Against Discrimination in Education (GLADE) and Gay and Lesbian Educational Employees (GLEE). In 1996, we became a local chapter of the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). After becoming a highly independent organization, we became a self-governing 501(c)3 organization in 2006. For many years GSAFE focused our programs in South Central Wisconsin, but incrementally broadened our geographic scope. We now serve the entire state of Wisconsin, partnering with youth and adult allies to create schools that include and affirm LGBTQIA+ students. Over the past decade, we’ve shifted programming to explicitly center the most marginalized of our community– queer and transgender people of color. More specifically, during the 2023-24 period, we undertook an organizational restructuring alongside an external consultant with the clear intention to promote and support Black leadership at the Executive level. The result was the promotion of Tyrone Creech, Jr. as our Executive Director. With his years of experience leading the Youth Leadership program, Tyrone has deeply enriched our connections with queer and transgender youth of color, addressing their need for regional support. Under his leadership, GSAFE is continuing to advance safety, justice, and liberation for all queer and transgender youth in Wisconsin.
