Gateway Cooperative began as a grassroots community concept in 2024, emerging from a series of trans-centered house music gatherings and queer makers market events hosted at the Green Room in St. Paul. These early events were organized to create safer, affirming spaces for trans and gender non-conforming people to gather, dance, and connect, spaces that were largely missing within the local nightlife and arts landscape. The strong response from the community, along with growing attendance and word-of-mouth support, demonstrated a clear need for a more sustained and intentional trans-centered cultural space. Building on this momentum, Gateway Cooperative formally incorporated in January 2025 to establish a cooperative structure that could support long-term sustainability, shared leadership, and paid opportunities for trans creatives and workers. In March 2025, Gateway hosted its first event in its current space on Selby Avenue, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s growth. Since then, Gateway has continued to develop as both a business and community organization, producing trans-led dance and cultural events rooted in safety, joy, and collective care.
