Common Love was born out of the response to a trans youth in Des Moines seeking clothing which affirmed their gender expression that their parents would not purchase/support and they could not afford. The response to this post inspired Common Love to be formed in April of 2023. Community members began to organize and research whether local organizations provided clothing and gender affirming services to the LGTBQ+ community. Their research revealed a need for this specific resource, and in general for a third, sober space where the queer community could come together. The Common Love space offers a supportive environment where newly out and curious trans folks could be fitted for and try on binders in-person and receive advice and guidance on gender affirming care. There are very few places where trans folks can try on binder in Des Moines (or Iowa). Common Love has hosted regular pop-ups since 2023 and also attends external LGBTQ+ events to increase its reach, dispense free clothing, and gender affirming resources.
